Coen Brothers - Mixed Reviews For Burn After Reading

The Coen Brothers newfangled film Burn After Reading, which received its international premiere at the Venice film festival this week, has received mixed reviews.

Following up the Oscar-winning No Country for Old Men, the Coen Brothers managed to assume the services of world-wide superstars Brad Pitt and George Clooney for their latest project, alongside regular collaborators such as Frances McDormand.

Loosely, the film is dark clowning based on stupid spies, stupid personal trainers and a cluster of early stupid people thrown in for practiced measure.

It is a return to the wacky type of photographic film the Coens are comfortably known for and despite the immense amounts of attention its stars received at Venice on Wednesday, Burn After Reading is not loss down that well with critics.

The Guardian declares: "There are smart films more or less smart people, smart films about dumb people, just Burn Before Reading is a dumb film around dumb people."

Variety is somewhat more damming, describing the film as "immature" and "too basically silly".

"Nothing about the project?s execution inspires the feeling that this was ever intended as anything more than a titlark, which would be fine if it were a good ane. As it is audience teeth-grinding sets in early and never lets up," the powder magazine declares.

The Hollywood Reporter is more complementary, saying: "It takes for a while to adjust to the rhythms and subversive temper of "Burn" because this is actually an anti-spy thriller in which null is at stake, no one acts with intelligence operation and everything ends badly.

"Those who zest this picture might treat it as the sec coming of "The Big Lebowski"; those who don't might wonder at a story in which no character has a level head."

Burn After Reading is set to be released in the US on September 12th.

A quintette featuring triad sisters, their brother, and their charles VII Herbert Best quaker, Tyler, TX's Eisley formed in 1997 when the DuPree siblings -- guitarist Chauntelle, singer/guitarist Sherri, singer/keyboardist Stacy, and drummer Weston -- began playing with bassist Jon Wilson. Originally called the Towheads, the band began performing local gigs the following year, when Stacy was barely eight days old. Over the adjacent fiver days, the set wrote and played, expanding their touring region to the Dallas-Fort Worth region and in the end winning a 2003 Best New Act Award from the Dallas Observer. A few months later, the radical released their debut EP, Laughing City, on the indie imprint Record Collection, and toured that leap and summertime with Coldplay and Ron Sexsmith. The Marvellous Things EP arrived later in 2003, and early in 2005, their first base full-length, Room Noises, arrived. 2007's Combinations was Eisley's low full-length album of exclusively novel material and featured a slimly darker, more rock-oriented sound.

Innovatively fusing traditional heathenish musics with state of the art rhythms, the work of Deep Forest was charles Herbert Best typified by their 1993 smash "Sweet Lullaby," which brought together the present-day sounds of ambient techno with the persistent voices of the Pygmies of the central African rain woodland. The envision was in the first place the work of the French keyboardists and programmers Eric Mouquet and Michael Sanchez; afterwards the latter returned from Africa with boxes of records he'd picked up across the continent, he and Mouquet began sampling the native sounds for use with their atmospherical dance tracks, and with the assistance of producer Dan Lacksman, their eponymous debut LP appeared in 1993. Propelled by the international strike "Sweet Lullaby," Deep Forest was a surprise success; Mouquet and Sanchez soon began process on a reexamination, this time exploring such areas as Mongolia, India and Hungary, recording various tracks with singer Marta Sebestyen. The resulting album, Boheme, appeared in 1995; the third Deep Forest record, Comparsa, followed in 1998, with Live in Japan coming into court a year later. In 2000 the duo recorded a soundtrack, Pacifique, to the French film Le Prince du Pacifique. Deep Forest returned in 2002 with its following proper studio record album, Music.Detected_.

Da Vinci Code movie banned from filming in church

ROME —

Rome's diocese said Monday it has barred the producers of "Angels & Demons" from filming in two churches for the prequel to the "The Da Vinci Code," the popular book and film that angered many Catholic leaders.

Producers of the film, directed by Ron Howard and starring Tom Hanks, were turned down because the movie "does not conform to our views," said Monsignor Marco Fibbi, a spokesman for the diocese.

The crew had asked to film in the churches of Santa Maria del Popolo and Santa Maria della Vittoria, two architectural jewels in the heart of Rome that include paintings by Caravaggio, sculptures by Bernini and a chapel designed by Raphael.

Permission was denied in 2007, but the issue surfaced only now that filming is ongoing in Rome, Fibbi said. The Sony-produced film was put on hold during the Writers Guild of America strike that ended in February and is now scheduled for release in May 2009.

Fibbi's comments first were reported this week by the Italian entertainment magazine "TV Sorrisi e Canzoni." "It's a film that treats religious issues in a way that contrasts with common religious sentiment," Fibbi told The Associated Press in a telephone interview. "We would be helping them create a work that might well be beautiful but that does not conform to our views."

Fibbi acknowledged that the controversy over writer Dan Brown's "The Da Vinci Code" and its blockbuster movie version had weighed on the decision.

The story drew anger and prompted calls for boycotts by church leaders worldwide with the idea that Jesus married and fathered children and by depicting the conservative Catholic movement, Opus Dei, as a murderous cult.

"This is a prequel to 'The Da Vinci Code' and it's clear that the theme is similar," Fibbi said. He added that the ban would not stop the crew from filming the exterior of the churches.

Brown's "Angels and Demons" is a religious thriller combining an ancient secret brotherhood called the Illuminati, code-cracking, a papal conclave and a high-tech weapon threatening to destroy the Vatican.

It features Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon of "The Da Vinci Code" fame, played by Hanks in the movie.

Calls to Sony Pictures in London and Rome were not immediately returned Monday.

Artist Kills Pete Doherty

Pete Doherty has been depicted dead in a selection of disturbing poses for a macabre new exhibition by Scottish artist Peter Howson.

The Contemporary painter using his brushes to illustrate Doherty with his eyes closed and a sickly pallor, giving the impression the Babyshambles singer has passed away.

And Howson insists he is using Doherty as an example as he hopes the controversial collection will steer the rocker's fans away from drugs.

Howson, who has battled drug and alcohol addiction himself, says: "Pete Doherty is someone who has really interested me over the last few months. His spiral downwards reminds me of what I went through myself and I can identify with the way he is acting.

"Me wanting to paint him dead was pointing the finger at him and saying 'You can influence a whole generation'. He could, if he wanted to, become the right kind of hero."

A spokesman for the Babyshambles frontman says: "Peter Howson has never met Pete as far as I am aware, so I don't know where he's getting his inspiration from. We have not seen the drawings and I don't see how Peter knows that much about Pete's lifestyle."

Last month, Doherty walked free from London's Wormwood Scrubs after serving 29 days of a 14-week prison sentence for probation violation and drugs offences.
